Brookhaven Retreat is making more improvements. Since
2000, we've built a new pool, water playground, and
two new conference buildings; improved our main
parking lot; built a new road; painted and redecorated
our dining rooms; added extensive landscaping
including garden areas, grass, sprinkler systems,
decorative fencing, etc.; finished the lower level of
the Nazareth Conference Building to use as a rec room
with bathrooms, furniture, fireplace, foosball, table
tennis, and air hockey; and, as always, kept
everything looking fresh with paint and regular
maintenance. Now, we're at it again. Here are our
current projects:
New Mattresses
The stand-alone beds in our private rooms were previously
furnished with standard
full-sized mattresses. We have upgraded all 26 private
room
mattresses, box springs, and frames to be queen-sized.
What's more, each mattress is a luxurious pillow-top,
pocket-coil mattress. Enjoy!
Motel Bathrooms Remodel
Our motel bathrooms have been functional and adequate, but outdated
and less convenient than what many people are
accustomed to today. Here are the steps we're taking
to improve our 16 motel bathrooms:
-
Gutting the entire bathroom by removing all fixtures,
walls (to the studs), flooring (to the beams), and the
door between the bathroom and vanity
-
Moving the sink, which had been in the bathroom
between the tub and commode to the vanity area,
allowing one person to use the sink, mirror and vanity
while another uses the shower
-
Building vanity cabinetry
-
Replacing the tub with a shower that's roomy, more
water-efficient, and easy to get in and out of
-
Installing more rustic cedar walls and trim
-
Installing high-grade ceramic tile in entry, vanity
area, and bathroom
-
Building shelving next to shower for towels,
toiletries, etc.
-
Installing a six-panel door between bathroom and
vanity area
-
Installing new mirrors (including a full-length) and
hardware such as towel holders, robe hooks, etc.
-
Installing new lighting, including an extra can light
over shower and decorative lighting in the vanity
area.
-
Making one bathroom (Rm. 19) more handicap-friendly
with wider entries, grab bars, etc. Room 19 itself
will also be remodeled somewhat to be a more open
floor plan.
Because we can take only one or two motel rooms out of
service at a time, the remodeling will be done
incrementally. A guesthouse has been opened up for
retreat groups to use in place of the motel rooms that
are being remodeled. The bathroom remodeling is slated
to be complete in 2012.
